The best fish and chips I've had in Southampton (and I eat a lot of fish and chips!)
Myself and a mate go to Mike's about once a fortnight and it is always good. It is always clean and tidy too and the staff are friendly and welcoming.
It is more of a cafe than a fish and chip take-away but they do take away too.
For £5 you can get a big plateful of fish chips and mushy peas (or curry sauce). Can't say fairer than that.
